Pictrix UV_Creeper plugin (free plugin) is a wonderful way to unwrap tubes, pipes, cords, wiring, handrails. I have used this extensively for several game models and it works really wonderfully, as long as your mesh is clean without errors. Just select two vertices in a row, and the plugin will make UV seam to a line continuing from those points. It's really amazing how clean results you can get from this plugin.

UV Spider, native Lightwave feature, does a similar thing but it is in my opinion quite cumbersome to use. I really recommend to grab this free plugin from great guys here in Japan, pictrix.jp and get your tubes unwrap in Lightwave.
