    The Recent Past

One of the first things that was expressed to me while I was talking is that is an acknowledgment that the product itself is not living in a bubble and that the Lightwave team is extremely aware of what the competition are doing.

According to them, version 9.0 is a significant release for the application. Keeping that in mind, they had to change (ie rewrite) the program, in order for it to be able to compete in the current marketplace. As mentioned before in this thread, the program is being upgrades in stages. Donetta Colboch, vice president of # marketing likened to a mayor home remodeling project, and now we are beginning to see the results. Under the leadership of Jay Roth, the idea of this version was, to create a solid foundation for the future growth of the program. They feel that with the current release they have done that.

Another areas that they promised to work more, is the communication with the user base. According to Duece, the 3D beta coordinator, the new development team has opened completely new communication levels of communication. Ideas and suggestions, and even complaints, posted on web forums (like ours) are now regularly monitored by the development staff. And thanks to the success of the open beta for 9.0, and the amount of user participation this program will continue for future releases.

    Version 9.0

A big part of the problems they had, was the need to upgrade the core of the application. According to them, on this release they first wanted to concentrate on the strength of the program (i.e. the rendering engine) , fix some long standing problems (Antialiasing, The Real Camera Lenses, DOF) and lay a more solid foundation behind the scenes of the app.

    Version 9.x

In the next few months There will be multiple releases of Lightwave. These releases will address specific areas in Lightwave that are in dire need of improvement. In Boston most of the demos were done for Lightwave 9.x (x as in undetermined future release). This will be free release, available for download soon (Ill try to find out more details soon on WHAT is coming on the that release). The people I talked to were candid about the know weaknesses of the application (character animation, interface issues, playing nice with other apps), and they promised that the future 9.x releases will address these shortcomings.

I mentioned how a lot of us feel that the SDK & the Character Animation capabilities need dire improvement. They said:

    The SDK

The opening of the Lightwave SDK will be an ongoing project for versions 9.x. As more releases of the application are done more and more parts the SDK of the application will be opened. Since a some of the coders of the app right now were third party developers in the first place, so there is an understanding of the benefit of this.

    Character Animation

Improvement and enhancement of the character animation capabilities of the program is an ongoing concern for them. They promised that the 9.x releases would address this mayor issue and that they currently working on it and they a have been getting a lot of input on how to improve this area.
