Iron Sky

Conversation with the CGI masterminds behind the feature film that everybody is talking about.

What does it take to make a movie about steampunkish Nazis who fled to the moon in 1945 and return from their lunar lair in space-worthy Zeppelins more than 60 years later?
In the case of Iron Sky, a feature film from Finnish film production company Blind Spot Pictures due out in April, the answer is an active imagination, boundless creativity, unbelievable perseverance and a remarkable flare for LightWave 3D generated CGI.
Iron Sky explores this alternative-reality view of the fate of post-World War II Nazis and their reemergence with the help of hundreds of CGI shots. To pull off the massive undertaking, Energia Productions’ Samuli Torssonen, Iron Sky VFX producer, assembled a team of more than a dozen LightWave 3D artists.
Samuli Torssonen and award-winning LightWave 3D animator Kelly Myers, who is serving as the film’s CG supervisor, discuss the project, the animation hurdles they faced and how LightWave 3D helped them overcome the challenges.
